Abstract:Ohio plays an important role in the 50th anniversary of our Nation’s Interstate. Harvey Firestone, founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, was born in Columbiana, Ohio, in 1868. In 1904 he joined Henry Ford to make rubber tires for the newly invented automobile. In 1919, Lieutenant Colonel Dwight D. Eisenhower led that famous military convoy across America as a test to see how well they could perform if the U.S. was attacked. Harvey Firestone lent two of his trucks for the convoy. In June 2006, a national convoy retraced the route of the 1919 First Transcontinental Motor Train in reverse.
