Abstract:This paper documents the extent to which subgrade uniformity was achieved on the Ohio SHRP test road. As construction proceeded, considerably more subgrade undercutting was required than originally anticipated. Much of the undercutting was due to the presence of old basements, wells, septic fields, etc. left when the section of U.S. 23 notrh of Delaware, Ohio was upgraded from a two-lane pavement to a four-lane divided facility in the 1960s. Undercutting depths varied from a few inches to over ten feet. Moisture and density were monitored with a nuclear density gauge to ensure proper compaction as the subgrade was brought up to its final elevation.
