The practice of conducting a half-cell potential survey during the assessment of the condition of a concrete deck was reexamined with the objective of eliminating some of the doubts concerning its benefits. It was found that the survey grid size of 4.0 ft recommended in ASTM C 876 had partly contributed to the uncertainty because this spacing is to

A prototype stop bar system was installed and evaluated at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The purpose of the year-long evaluation was to gain operational experience on the use of a stop bar system and how it could possibly impact the air traffic system. To determine the effectiveness of the stop bar system, data were collected from both use

To achieve the goals of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (CAAA), State and local officials must first understand the requirements for transportation plans, programs, and projects. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has prepared this brochure to explain in detail Title I of the CAAA, and selected parts of Title II. Technical terms are hig

This research report documents the development models for control of signalized diamond interchanges during oversaturated traffic conditions. Oversaturated traffic conditions occur when the average traffic demand exceeds the capacity of the signal system. The dynamic optimization model proposed is the principal product of this research. The control

This volume presents realistic estimates for the level of fuel economy that is achievable in the next decade for cars and light trucks made in the United States and Canada.
The deformational characteristics of various soils at small (.00001 to .001%) to intermediate (.001 to .1%) shearing strains using resonant column and torsional shear (RCTS) equipment were investigated. Soils tested include dry sand, undisturbed silts and clays, and compacted clay subgrades. In addition, metal specimens have been developed to inves

This brochure summarizes the provisions of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA) that can best help State and local officials as they work toward the air quality goals of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 (CAAA). This summary is divided into six categories: (1) Funding Flexibility; (2) Increased Funding Levels; (3)

The Alabama Aerospace Curriculum Guide is designed for teachers of grades K-3 who have little or no experience in the area of aviation or space. The purpose of this guide is to provide an array of aviation and space activities which may be used by teachers to enrich locally-designed programs. The Alabama Aerospace Curriculum Guide is supplemental i

The objective of this research was to analyze and evaluate the interaction between heavy vehicle characteristics and pavement performance for application in pavement management. Heavy vehicle (truck and bus) characteristics include tire types (bias ply, radial, low profile radial, and "super-single"), tire pressures, tire contact (area and load dis

Pilot reports of aviation incidents to the Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) provide a window on the problems occurring in today's airline cockpits. The narratives of 10 pilot reports of errors made in the automation-assisted altitude-change task are used to illustrate some of the issues associated with pilot and automatic-systems interaction

Laboratory studies have shown that microsilica concrete (MC) has sufficient strength and impermeability to substitute for LMC in bridge deck overlays. In addition, MC can be mixed in off-site batch plants, like Portland cement concrete (PCC). This is an advantage over LMC on certain jobs, as batching LMC requires the use of mobile mixing plants at

The Research Unit is conducting a study of chip seal emulsions using asphalts containing polymers on test sections that were built in 1987 on Oregon Route 22 near Stayton in Marion County. A commonly used emulsion in the 1987 OSHD Specifications for Asphalt Materials was used as a standard for comparison.
Construction of the South Slough (Charleston) Bridge was completed in March of 1991. The structure was constructed with prestressed concrete beams using grit-impregnated, epoxy coated prestressing strands. While epoxy coated reinforcing steel has been used successfully to combat corrosion for several years, epoxy coating for prestressing strands is

The primary goal of this project was to assemble the hardware and software necessary to form a prototype sktop video animation workstation to support traffic accident reconstruction.
The objective of this study was to compare the effect of using the Oregon State Highway Division (OSHD) modified Table-1 asphalts and the OSHD modified Table-2 asphalts in asphalt concrete; the primary factors for comparison were reflective and thermal cracking. Crack information obtained prior to paving was compared to crack information obtained t
