Archival copy of original Federal Aviation Administration standards and specifications for use in the design of aircraft deicing facilities. To ensure review of all changes, user should consult <http://www.faa.gov/arp/150acs.htm#Airport_Safety>.
The objectives of this project are to: (1) assess, through the use of focus groups, vehicle-buyer perceptions, needs, and desires concerning the delivery and presentation of motor vehicle safety-performance data. This includes the existing frontal-mash test information and assessment of the public's desire for other crash test information e.g., sid

Readiness to Perform (RTP) testing has become an increasingly popular alternative to biochemical screening as a method for assessing risk factors (i.e., drug, alcohol, fatigue, etc.) in the workplace. The focus of RTP testing is on the assessment of worker performance capability prior to job engagement. Thus, RTP testing is a method of assessing th

This report describes a short test program to assess the potential for neck injury induced by placing padding on the interior walls of an aircraft cabin to reduce the possibility of a head injury during a crash. Such padding is a possible mechanism of achieving the heightened impact protection requirements adopted by the Federal Aviation Administra

The third phase of research on Human Factors in Aviation Maintenance continued to look at the human's role in the aviation maintenance system via investigations, demonstrations, and evaluations of the research program outputs. This report describes an evaluation of a computer-based training simulation for troubleshooting an airliner environmental c

Problems with corrosion of steel strands in grouted bridge cable stays have raised concern about the integrity of the grout layer protecting the strands. Bleed water that may accumulate in the grout layer if voids or bubbles are trapped during the grouting process can lead to corrosion of the cables. This research study was undertaken to evaluate v

This report evaluates the operation of freeway high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes in Houston and Dallas through calendar year 1992. As of the end of 1992, HOV lanes were in operation on four Houston freeways: Katy Freeway (1-10); North Freeway (I-45); Northwest Freeway (US 290); and Gulf Freeway (I-45). The only HOV facility in operation in Dallas

This document presents the results of a study to develop and test distress and performance prediction models for rigid pavements (continuously reinforced concrete, jointed reinforced concrete, and jointed plain concrete pavements) in Texas. These models were developed for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for possible incorporation int

This report summarizes the requirements for development of a long-term pavement performance (LTPP) program for the state of Texas. This work is part of a project sponsored by the Texas Department of Transportation to develop distress prediction models for rigid pavements which are to be incorporated in the Texas pavement management information syst

In this research study, Spectral-Analysis-of-Surface-Waves (SASW), Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD), and compression wave (P-wave) tests were employed at flexible pavement sites at the Texas Transportation Institute's (Texas A&M University) test facility in Bryan, Texas, at a newly constructed site on Loop 1 in Austin, Texas, and at pavement site

This report, required by Section 108(f)(3) of the Clean Air Act, as amended in 1990, addresses the issues of motor vehicles and air quality. The report discusses the challenges faced in attempting to improve air quality through transportation programs. It also provides a status report on meeting the transportation provisions of the Clean Air Act Am

This plan describes an end-to-end study of operational concepts and procedures associated with the introduction of electronic data communications between flight crews and air traffic controllers. Full performance controllers from terminal facilities will interact with type-related line pilots in four cockpit simulators networked into the Federal Av

Transportation facilities in the coastal zone of Louisiana, such as roadways, bridges, and ports, are subject to flooding which must be considered in the design, operation, and maintenance of these facilities. Flooding can result from hurricanes, tidal action, run-off, backwater, and combinations of these events. This report presents the results of

This report contains a five-year plan to perform research of human factors issues and topicsrelated to Data Link implementations in general aviation and transport category aircraft.Elements such as resource allocation and management and coordinated cooperativeresearch efforts are considered to be critical and are carefully developed.
At request of the Structures Design and Construction Division, the Engineering Research and Development Bureau performed full-scale testing and finite element analysis (FEA) of span-wire traffic-signal poles to evaluate their structural adequacy. Results ;Also pub. as New York State Dept. of Transportation, Albany. Engineering Research and Developm

The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has increased their use of open-graded paving mixtures. During the last five years, ODOT has constructed several hundred miles of highways with open-graded "F" asphalt concrete mixtures. These pavements have performed well, with no known failures attributable to moisture damage. In 1992, many "F" mixtur

The objectives of this research were to further evaluate the characteristics of locally produced fly ash and to develop test procedures which would expedite the evaluation of fly ash stabilized soils. Because cement and lime stabilization techniques are well established, comparisons of fly ash stabilization methods with these materials were also ne

A system has been developed that graphically re-creates the radar data recorded at En Route air traffic control (ATC) facilities. Each facility records data sent to the displays associated with the airspace under its control on a System Analysis Report (SAR) tape. SATORI (Situation Assessment Through Re-creation of Incidents) overlays the SAR data

This report presents a total of 17 traditional and 5 new head and facial dimensions from a random composite U.S. female and male civilian population measured over a period of 30 years. The 5 new measurements, identified to describe specific anatomical relationships of the face, can have a direct influence on equipment design concepts. The survey po

This work developed, installed and verified a system to accelerate incremental consolidation testing on soils. The final system meets the requirements of AASHTO T-216. The completed system reduces elapsed time required to run an incremental consolidation test from +/- 3 weeks to +/- 3 days and the man time from +/- 20 hours to +/- 2 hours.
