Abstract:The study highlights the implementation of shallow foundation analysis and design into the finite element software FB-MultiPier. Key details of the report are: ⅰ) Bearing capacity, settlement, and passive resistance of shallow foundations in Florida limestone are characterized with a graphical user input/output FEM software; ⅱ) Bearing capacity of rigid rock using the Hoek-Brown method, iii) Strength envelops specific to Florida limestone formations can be selected by the engineer or defined by entry of the intact properties and adjusted recovery or the mass properties; iv) Single limestone layer and limestone over sand cases can be modeled for bearing capacity and settlement; v) Strength envelopes that describe passive resistance (extension q-p space) are discussed and implemented; vi) Lateral resistance on a shallow foundation from base friction or passive soil/rock resistance for normal and oblique loading conditions are considered; vii) Case of inclined loading, i.e. reduced bearing capacity of Florida limestone as a function of the angle of the inclined load (ratio of horizontal to vertical loads) and the limestone friction angle are included; note, using the inclination factor methods for soil in AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications and may be underpredicted; viii) Bearing capacity of eccentrically loaded shallow foundations on Florida limestone may be estimated using Meyerhof's effective footing width (B' = B - 2e); ix) Implementation outcomes and design example sets covering the full range of shallow foundation design features for bearing capacity, settlement, passive resistance, and base friction are included, as are recommendations for assessing the heterogeneity of limestone with the minimum number of field and lab tests to identify spatial varying unit weight, friction angle, cohesion, modulus in the foundation footprint of the site.
