Abstract:United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) report GAO-22-104579 released a recommendation for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to lead research to advance passenger safety and mitigate communicable disease transmission in air travel. In response to this recommendation and in support of a data-driven Safety Management System (SMS) framework to mitigate risks of disease outbreaks, the FAA established an international consortium of industry, academic, and government partners. One of the group’s goals is to generate and publish data necessary for realistic parameterization of model simulations, improving quantitative assessments of disease risks and the efficacy of mitigation countermeasures. Ventilation data from across the gate-to-gate air travel journey represent a critical data component, as the air exchange and transport of respiratory pathogens may greatly impact passenger and crew risk exposure. This report by the consortium partner National Research Council of Canada (NRC) presents ventilation data collected from an airport jet bridge and mock-up jet bridge with similar dimensions to an airport jet bridge. Tracer gas and aerosol data were collected inside the mock-up jet bridge with and without heated manikins. Additional ventilation data were collected for airport gate hold room that connects to the airport jet bridge.
