Abstract:This is a review of new approaches that States and communities are designing and using to respond more effectively to life-threatening traumatic injuries, particularly those caused by motor vehicle crashes. Improved approaches are now available to all communities, and when effective emergency medical services (EMS) and trauma care are integrated, deaths decline, and disabling injuries are avoided. Certain overall trends are noted. When communities implement a coordinated system effectively, and employ a trauma center designation plan that uses medical facilities sensibly, persons with the most severe injuries can bypass the nearest hospital and travel to a specialized trauma unit with better care. Many communities are improving medical data collection and evaluation practices to determine the effectiveness of coordinated approaches to trauma care. Communities are finding that although coordinated systems are expensive, the investment more than pays for itself in the long run when all issues are considered.
