Abstract:TraumaHawk, a smartphone app for law enforcement and first responders, was designed by the University of Iowa (UI) to connect pre-hospital emergency care to hospital trauma teams. At the scene of a crash, first responders use TraumaHawk to generate and send a report with vital collision information, as well as photographs showing extent of intrusion and damage in a vehicle’s occupant compartment, to the receiving trauma center. Utilizing TraumaHawk to identify serious crashes remotely provides trauma teams with significantly more time to prepare for incoming patients than the conventional ambulance crew notification. TraumaHawk results to date have been positive, with a significant increase in emergency department (ED) prep time. To date, the TraumaHawk project has completed three successful phases of development. Phase four was to include the regional expansion westward in Iowa. During this phase, updates to the app and alerting system were required. Expansion proved to be challenge because of a variety of HIPPA and other privacy and infrastructure challenges.
