Abstract:Noise analysis is one important component of environmental evaluation for new flight procedure design. Communities, airports, regulators. Currently, the Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT) is the primary tools used to evaluate new procedures and traffic intensity levels for calculating noise impact footprints near airports. AEDT noise calculations use Noise-Power-Distance (NPD) interpolation to calculate noise using engine data generated through flight test and/or analysis. This procedure results in a simple and computationally tractable noise estimation capability for engine noise sources only. Aerodynamic and procedural noise contributions are not fully incorporated into the model. This project involved a collaborative effort involving Penn State University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Penn State had the responsibility to assess the quality of noise predictions made by existing aircraft noise prediction codes. MIT had responsibility for noise predictions made by existing aircraft noise prediction codes. Both engine noise and airframe noise were examined using different modules in ANOPP. Differences between predictions from different models were quantified. For example, there were noticeable differences between different noise models for landing gear noise that ranged from the simplest, involving no geometric detail, and the models that allowed inclusion of considerable geometric details to be input.
