Abstract:The Western Transportation Institute (WTI) has been communicating with Bike Walk Montana and the Montana Department of Commerce’s Main Street Program to assist small towns with pop-up projects aimed at slowing traffic to create safer streets. The Department of Commerce reached out regarding opportunities for pop-up traffic calming in Hamilton, Montana, where City staff were already discussing traffic calming on neighborhood streets near the Rocky Mountain Lab (RML). WTI worked with City staff and Bike Walk Biterroot to provide technical assistance on the installation and evaluation of the project. The traffic circles were installed by volunteers from Bike Walk Biterroot and the surrounding neighborhood and City staff were on hand to oversee each installation. The goal of the traffic calming process is to test interim style pop-up installations for effectiveness at achieving project goals, as well as community perception around safety, usability, and aesthetics. For this project, two goals were identified: 1. Slow drivers’ speed along neighborhood streets 2. Pilot traffic calming as a tool for more neighborhood streets.
