Abstract:

This manual explains the fundamental concepts of structural design with ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) as covered in the AASHTO Guide Specifications for Structural Design with UHPC. The manual includes a basic overview of the learning objectives associated with the Structural Design with UHPC Workshop initially developed and delivered by FHWA. An overview of the basic design requirements for UHPC members is provided with a detailed comparison between design of conventional concrete (CC) and UHPC members. Additional details are provided for aspects of design unique for UHPC members. Details for a complete UHPC box beam design example are provided in addition to a preliminary design table for the developed UHPC box beam section. Detailed descriptions of spreadsheet activities used in the workshop are also provided.

This manual was developed to supplement the presentations and activities provided in the Structural Design with UHPC Workshop. The initial draft of this report was developed for the first workshop pilot in February 2024. Justin Ocel provided a comprehensive review of the manual.
