This report provides initial thoughts on how the strut-and-tie method (STM) can be used with ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) disturbed regions, such as those near supports and the points of application of concentrated loads at strength and extreme limit states. A brief background on STM and plastic design methodology is provided for context. Limitations for the use of STM for UHPC members are discussed. The report includes initial recommendations for using STM for UHPC members based on provisions in the AASHTO Guide Specifications for Structural Design with UHPC and highlights related research needed. An example problem (based on FHWA-NHI-17-071) is provided to show how the basic framework may be applied for UHPC deep beams.
