Abstract:Of the 42,514 motor vehicle traffic fatalities in 2022, there were 17,283 (41%) that occurred in rural areas, 25,023 (59%) in urban areas, and 208 (less than 1%) in areas that were not reported as rural or urban. In 2022, traffic fatalities in rural areas decreased slightly from 17,339 in 2021 to 17,283, and in urban areas decreased by 3 percent from 25,749 in 2021 to 25,023. According to the Census Bureau’s 2022 American Community Survey, an estimated 20 percent of the U.S. population lived in rural areas, and according to the FHWA, 32 percent of the total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) in 2022 were in rural areas. However, rural areas accounted for 41 percent of all traffic fatalities in 2022.
