Abstract:This issue of Traffic Safety Facts describes the most current data on rural and urban fatalities and related issues from 2024. Key Findings: Of 39,254 traffic fatalities in 2024, 16,006 (41%) were in rural areas and 22,905 (58%) were in urban areas; rural traffic fatalities decreased 4.7 percent from 2023; urban fatalities decreased 4.7 percent from 2023; the Census says about 21 percent of the population is rural areas, and FHWA says 31 percent of the total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) were in rural areas; however, rural areas accounted for 41 percent of all traffic fatalities; the fatality rate per 100 million VMT was 1.5 times higher in rural areas than urban areas; of the 16,006 traffic fatalities in rural areas, 28 percent were killed in speeding-related crashes; of the 22,905 traffic fatalities in urban areas, 29 percent were killed in speeding-related crashes; and alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities in rural areas decreased by 2.4 percent and alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities in urban areas decreased by 5.4 percent.
