Abstract:This publication presents design procedures for the hydraulic analysis of bridge waterway openings. The text describes the general nature of the constriction created by constructing a highway/bridge crossing in a floodplain and provides detailed step-by-step design procedures for analyzing the flow through a bridge to calculate flow velocities and bridge backwater. The method of analysis is based on the results of hydraulic model studies conducted at the Colorado State University and on later measurements and field data collected by U.S. Geological Survey. This is the second edition of this publication as revised in March 1978. Sketches and design charts are included to provide a practical method of analysis, and many example problems are used to illustrate application of the design method for varying site conditions. Special design problems include dual bridges, skewed and eccentric crossings, abnormal stage, backwater with scour, superstructure and/or roadway inundated, spur dikes and bridge backwater with supercritical flow.
