The purpose of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) is to establish uniform national criteria for the use of traffic control devices that meet the needs and expectancy of road users on all streets, highways, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, and site roadways open to public travel. There are nine parts to this manual: (1) General, (2) Signs, (3) Markings, (4) Highway traffic signals, (5) Traffic control device consideration for automated vehicles, (6) Temporary traffic control, (7) Traffic control for school areas, (8) Traffic control for railroad and light rail transit grade crossings, and (9) Traffic control for bicycle facilities.
