Vehicle-pedestrian interactions in shared spaces represents a complex safety problem. Ideally, the vehicle must react safely to any pedestrian behavior, while the pedestrian behavior itself can be very complex and unpredictable. To emphasize this safety problem, in a 2019 Traffic Safety Facts report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) 1, it was shown that the percentage of pedestrian fatalities was increasing from 2008 to 2017, even as advanced driving assist systems (ADASs) were being developed and deployed.
