Abstract:Vehicle-pedestrian interactions in shared spaces represents a complex safety problem. Ideally, the vehicle must react safely to any pedestrian behavior, while the pedestrian behavior itself can be very complex and unpredictable. To emphasize this safety problem, in a 2019 Traffic Safety Facts report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) [1], it was shown that the percentage of pedestrian fatalities was increasing from 2008 to 2017, even as advanced driving assist systems (ADASs) were being developed and deployed.
