South Dakota’s low-volume roads (LVR) play an important role in the State’s economy, providing essential links not only within rural areas but also between rural and more populated areas. A significant portion of these roads are gravel, constructed with an assortment of different aggregate materials and under a range of governing specifications. Generally speaking, South Dakota’s gravel roads have performed well under a variety of traffic and environmental conditions, but ever-increasing traffic loadings, heavy trafficking during weakened support conditions, and decreasing funding levels make it challenging to effectively maintain the surface of these roadways. Furthermore, other issues unique to gravel roads present additional maintenance demands. Thus, local agencies are constantly seeking improved methods to effectively manage and maintain their LVRs.
