Abstract:When two networks are interdependent on each other, then failure occurring in one network will propagate to the other one, and there is a threshold above which a small disturbance will result in a cascading failure that may abruptly break down the system. In this project, the authors investigated the critical threshold that will prevent a network from breaking down in different scenarios. Multiple networks can be involved in an interdependent system; in this project, only two networks were considered in order to prove the concept. However, the framework can be generalized to multiple networks. An agent-based modeling framework was developed to simulate cascading failure between networks.
