Abstract:The goal of this project to develop a system to help minimize the impact to first responders’ health during a transportation related hazardous materials (HAZMAT) incident. The research team will develop a dashboard prototype that integrates health and environmental data that is collected using Internet of Things (IoT) sensors. This data will allow the Incident Commander and Safety Officer make strategic decisions to protect first responders and transportation workers. The prototype system is called REaCH – Real-Time Emergency Communication System for HAZMAT Incidents. REaCH will include real-time health monitoring of first responders and transportation workers through wearable devices that monitor exposure to hazardous materials.
