Abstract:Autonomous truck-mounted attenuators (ATMAs) promise transformative changes in mobile work zone operations by eliminating the need for a worker to operate an impact protection vehicle. The goal of this project was to pilot a demonstration of the ATMA technology, conduct an evaluation and assessment of the operational and safety functions of ATMA vehicle in a closed loop course, and test the feasibility of ATMA in active mobile work zones. For the active mobile work zone, the ATMA was used for a pavement testing operation using a falling weight deflectometer (FWD) on different facility types. This report provides a review of the ATMA safety and operational functions, the user training and feedback, the testing scheme for closed loop tests, and observations of test runs on active mobile work zones. This report also provides a benefit-cost analysis for procurement of ATMA technology.
