Abstract:The MnDOT Office of Traffic, Safety and Technology is developing a manual on the use of temporary barriers, truck-mounted attenuators and other types of positive protection devices as guidance for designers, construction workers and contractors. To support the development of this manual, MnDOT is interested in gathering information about best practices for positive protection in work zones used by other state departments of transportation (DOTs). This Transportation Research Synthesis presents the results of a survey distributed to members of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Subcommittee on Construction about their D̦̝̍͒ policies and practices for positive protection in work zones. It also includes findings from a literature search that focused on obtaining links to positive protection manuals, guidance and specifications from other DOTs.
