Abstract:This is one of seven studies exploring processes for developing Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) architectures for regional, statewide, or commercial vehicle applications. This study was prepared for a broad-based, non-technical audience. The New York-New Jersey-Connecticut Region has been at the forefront of deploying ITS. The development of this region's ITS architecture provides an instructive example because: the regional ITS architecture was developed with involvement from transportation, safety, and related agencies from three states; transit agency involvement has been significant; the center of this region is a complex urban area with a complicated, intermodal transportation system; and the region adapted existing ITS architectures using the National ITS Architecture.
