Abstract:This report documents one of the components of FTA's Advanced Public Transportation Systems (APTS) Program, a program structured to undertake research and development of innovative applications of advanced navigation, information, and communication technologies that most benefit public transportation. This report is an update to the original State-of-the-Art report which was published in April 1991, and a subsequent update, published in April 1992. It contains the results of a limited investigation of the extent of adoption of advanced technology in the provision of public transportation service in North America. It focuses on some of the most innovative or comprehensive implementations, categorized under three types of technologies: Smart Traveler, Smart Vehicle, and Smart Intermodal Systems. The objective of this effort is to increase the industry's knowledge of successful applications of advanced technologies with the expectation that this will lead to their widespread adoption.
