Abstract:Given the resurgence and importance of rail transportation in the United States, as well as the relative paucity of curricular opportunities at colleges and universities, the University of Kentucky is using National University Rail Center (NURail) Education Funds to expand its railroad offerings. The purpose of this education project is to incorporate multimodal learning modules into a semester course on railroad operations, and to incorporate elements of distance learning. The target group for the multimodal course is undergraduate senior civil engineering students and others with interest and permission of instructor. The deliverables of the project are summarized in the appendices to this report, which include lectures on: highway motor transportation, overland conveyors, pipelines, waterways, air transportation, and intermodal transportation.
