This research evaluated the effectiveness of ODOT’s cable barrier program. Site inspections of all known cable barrier systems were conducted.

Locations of most cable sites were found to be within guidelines for effective use. Comparison to sites with steeper slopes than 1 to 6 were located in

the literature and discussed.

The SAFE-T traffic data system was used to analyze cross over median collisions and F.O. cable barrier collisions. Cable barrier system decrease

fatalities significantly. The societal cost savings for the saved lives is estimated to be $48 million dollars per year. The analysis also identified that
;
cable barrier system increase the number of reported events with property damage.
