Abstract:The Strategic Highway Research Program 2 (SHRP2) Naturalistic Driving Study is the largest naturalistic driving study undertaken, collecting data from six sites around the United States, including State College, PA. Recruitment and admission of human subjects into the study is described, emphasizing the efforts to protect the confidentiality of subjects. Assessments relating to the driving task that are conducted on subjects are explained in detail for procedure and purpose. The instrumentation of the vehicle is also explained in detail with illustrations. In the process of enrolling subjects in the study, several trends were noted, including a high prevalence of Toyota Priuses in those interested in participating. Finally, the eventual role the data set will have for transportation research is discussed.
