Abstract:Stripping in hot mix asphalt (HMA) refers to the loss of adhesion between the asphalt cement and the aggregate surface primarily caused by the action of moisture and moisture vapor (Kandhal and Rickards 2001). Moisture damage begins with a reduction of cohesion in the asphalt binder or a reduction of adhesion between the asphalt binder and aggregate surface. Moisture damage often occurs in HMA without actual stripping. When advanced stripping is present, cores recovered from the roadway will often disintegrate during the coring operation.
