Abstract:Iowa Department of Transportation Research and Technology Bureau video presentation from the 2009 human factors and roadway safety workshop session titled: National Perspectives on Safety
Essie Wagner, program analyst, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Safety Countermeasures Division, speaks on national perspectives and how her department's work translates research into useful tools to enhance safety; how Iowa's leadership in developing methods and technologies to mitigate crashes is key in providing useful information to the rest of the country and abroad. She acknowledges Iowa's leadership as a national model for traffic safety research and implementation, citing examples such as the flexible license renewal policy and adopting the national roadway design guidelines.
She describes influences of safety for older drivers and the baby-boomer factor in effective transportation safety measures. In closing, she encourages fresh ideas, brainstorming and the sharing of information on safety for implementation among the states.
Sandra Larson closes the Opening Session by encouraging attendees to share their passion for safety through participation in the breakout sessions.
