Abstract:Based on data from 1982 through 1987 FARS, motorcycle helmets are estimated to be 29% effective in preventing fatalities. A matched-pairs technique was used to produce the effectiveness estimates of motorcycle helmets by comparing the probability of fatalities of drivers and passengers under helmeted and unhelmeted conditions. The general methodology employed in this analysis has been utilized in numerous reports to estimate the effectiveness of various restraint systems, for example, Evans and Frick (1988) and Partyka (1988). /Abstract from report summary page/
