The construction and performance of seven Virginia flexible pavements containing at least some experimental features were evaluated. The objective was to evaluate the performance of the pavements incorporating new or timely design concepts and to assess the flexibility of these concepts for further use.

Previous studies of binaural hearing suggested that speech sounds are less resistant to masking than are nonspeech sounds; experiments demonstrated that, when the nonspeech sounds are given a message to convey, they act more like speech. Earlier research showed that when subjects are deprived of vision, their walking behavior can be changed by pres

In addressing the issue of cost allocation, the author asked if there was a reasonable case for an analysis of highway cost allocation in Virginia, and, if so, what could be learned from the literature about an appropriate methodology.

In August 1977, after field installations on Rte. 617 had been in service for 16 years, a performance survey was made. At that time, the road was scheduled for resurfacing. The results showed that the Eastern Shore sands could provide durable, economical asphalt mixes when a small amount of imported filler material was added, and that with the incr

An evaluation was made of the applicability of the geophysical technique of radar subsurface profiling to estimating the extent of sidewalk undermining. It was found that there is a distinct difference between the observed radar echo patterns of a nonundermined sidewalk and those from an undermined sidewalk. Therefore, it is feasible to determine f

This working paper was prepared for the Public Transportation Division. Within the three-week period in which it was prepared, little more than a cursory examination could be made of the number of private providers operating in Virginia; however, the author did raise a number of pertinent questions about subsidizing them.
