This report was designed primarily to apprise persons in state agencies of the law of sovereign immunity in Virginia, to comment on the likelihood of this law being changed, and to identify the possible sources of such change. The report addresses the potential tort liability both of individual state employees and of the agencies themselves.

The results of this study are reported in two parts. The first deals with the various methods states are employing to reduce the number of joints in bridge decks. The most common method is the use of integral abutments, where the superstructure is joined to a flexible type of abutment. Typical designs of integral abutments are illustrated in the In

This report documents problem areas identified during the observation of five moving maintenance operations on urban freeways in Texas. The operations included striping and the installation of raised pavement markers. The problems were grouped into two categories: freeway design related and operational problems.

Recently, new concrete admixtures (super water reducers) have been developed and marketed by private industry. These admixtures permit the mixing and placement of very low water-cement ratio (0.32 to 0.38) concretes at conventional consistencies (slumps of 2 ½ to 3 ½ inches) with conventional equipment and slightly modified procedures. Mixes at gre

This report discusses a method of constructing an embankment over marshland soils by end-dumping reef shell directly onto the marshland with no other major subgrade preparation. The dumped reef shell is then spread out to form a "floating" embankment over the soft marshland. This report compares the subsidence characteristics of a reef shell embank

This report represents a continuation of analyses concerned with the patterns and methods of distributing grain from North Dakota. The collection and compilation of this type of data began in 1956-57. The objective of this report, like prior reports, is to provide the necessary data base for identifying trends in the distribution of grains and oils
