Description:The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) contracted with Sharma & Associates (SA) to evaluate the impact of implementing an advanced braking system (e.g., Electronically Controlled Pneumatic (ECP) brakes) on freight trains in the U.S. rail network. The research team used a mini-network to simulate the effects of the braking system on network operation performance parameters and scaled the mini-network results to the full size of the U.S. freight network.
The results showed improvement in network capacity and safety parameters using advanced braking systems on freight trains. Researchers observed the highest degree of improvement in reducing the amount of network delay by 41.1 percent, while results were lower for route reservation at signals (24.3 percent reduction) and the number of unnecessary stops at signals (4.4 percent reduction). The team noticed only minor improvement in increasing network velocity (0.8 percent) and number of station stops (0.5 percent), though the operational and financial impacts of these enhancements are not negligible. -
