From September 2018 to September 2021, the Federal Railroad Administration contracted Sharma & Associates to conduct an analysis of simulation results from a 5,000-mile mini-network, scaled up to represent characteristics of the North American rail system. The results showed that implementation of an advanced braking system (ABS) nationwide could yield a reduction in network delay of 38.4 percent, a reduction in braking at signals of 16.7 percent, and a reduction of 8.4 percent in unnecessary signal stops. Other measures of network performance, such as network velocity and network capacity utilization, showed minor improvements.
