  • Abstract:
This report presents the results and a description of the 1982 General Aviation Activity and Avionics Survey. The survey was conducted during 1983 by the FAA to obtain information on the activity and avionics of the United States registered general aviation aircraft fleet, the dominant component of civil aviation in the U.S. The survey was based on a statistically selected sample of about 10.2 percent of the general aviation fleet and obtained a response rate of 68 percent. Survey results are based upon responses but are expanded upward to represent the total population. Survey results revealed that during 1982 an estimated 36.5 million hours of flying time were logged by the 209,779 active general aviation aircraft in the U.S. fleet, yielding a mean annual flight time per aircraft of 174 hours. The active aircraft represented about 82 percent of the registered general aviation fleet. The report contains breakdowns of these and other statistics by manufacturer/model group, aircraft type, state, and region of based aircraft, and primary use. Also included are fuel consumption, lifetime airframe hours, avionics, and enginer hours estimates. In addition, tables are included for detailed analysis of the avionics capabilities of the general aviation fleet.
