Description:Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavements still retain value after their useful design life. The most effective method to reuse PCC pavements is to recycle them as base/subbase layers. The Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Waste Reduction Model (WARM) estimates greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions savings of approximately 0.04 metric tons CO2e per short ton of PCC not landfilled. Recycling PCC in place can achieve GHG emissions savings of 0.01 metric tons of CO2e per short ton of aggregate replaced. PCC fracturing (FCP) methods generally include (1) rubblization (RCP) with steel to concrete bond ruptured,(2) crack-and-seat (C&S) for PCC without steel reinforcement, and (3) break-and-seat (B&S) for PCC with steel reinforcement. FCP structural coefficients, as shown below, are the recommended literature-reported values for the design of HMA overlays: RCP: 0.14 -0.30, C&S: 0.20 -0.35, B&S: 0.20 -0.35 The AASHTO AASHTOWare Pavement ME Design characterizes pavement materials hierarchically, commensurate with their importance, size, and cost to the project. MEPDG Manual of Practice recommended FCP modulus values are: RCP: 50 ksi to 150 ksi, C&S, B&S: 150 ksi to 1,000 ksi. The scheme used to estimate FCP layer coefficients is mathematically expressed as a FCP = 0.0045 ∛(EFCP). The estimated FCP layer coefficients for Pike, Tate, and Forrest/Jones counties are similar to those reported in the literature.
