This document describes the project plan to evaluate usability and operator performance on the L3 Communications Corporation Explosive Detection System (EDS) eXaminer 3DXTM 6000. The 3DXTM 6000 uses Computed Tomography technology to produce simulated volumetric 3-D images of passenger baggage and highlight potential explosive threats. A human factors evaluation will be conducted in Phase I on the usability (i.e., graphic user interface, image quality, and information display) of the system, as well as the consistency and readability of training materials and user's manuals. In Phase II, a laboratory test with five airport security screeners and 100 test bags (30 with simulant explosives and 70 with false alarm items) will be conducted to assess system performance. The probability of detection and of false alarms, the sensitivity measure d', the response bias measure c, and the time it takes operators to make a decision will be analyzed.
