Terrorist activity at airports or on aircraft necessitates increasingly sensitive concourse detection systems. The development of a better system requires knowledge about those devices or items that are not weapons that are on a person going through detection system. This report is an attempt at finding information of interest regarding surgical implants. The types of implants available, materials involved, and other physical characteristics of the implants were found by contacting manufacturers, associations, and hospitals. People sent various pieces of literature in response to requests including brochures, xeroxes of templates of implants and whole ordering catalogs. This literature is referred to in each category of implants. Because the Depuy catalog creates a clear understanding of the types and characteristics of implants, xeroxed pages from this catalog are included throughout the report to supplement a concise definition for each system.
