Abstract:Data from 1320 aircraft flybys at Kennedy International Airport, Jamaica, New York, in 1975 were processed and stored in a computerized vortex data management system. The data were selectively recalled to determine vortex characteristics pertinent to the design of an effective wake vortex avoidance system. Vortex and meteorological characteristics which are relevant to the design of an effective wake vortex avoidance system are discussed from an analytical viewpoint as well as from an analysis of the data. Several formulations for feedback of vortex sensor information to provide vortex prediction are presented. Several wake vortex avoidance system designs are shown.
