From May 1974 through June 1975 the approach region to Runway 28R at Heathrow International Airport was equipped with aircraft wake vortex tracking equipment. The vortices from approximately 13,000 aircraft were monitored along with the attendant meteorological conditions. An overview of the Heathrow project is given, and it is shown how the project has significantly contributed to the capability to develop a vortex advisory system promising increased capacity through decreased aircraft separations.
