Abstract:Samples containing corrosion resistant reinforcing bars (CRRB) were prepared between 2002 and 2007 as part of a project sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to investigate durable long-term alternatives to conventional carbon steel reinforcement undergoing marine exposure. 75 Simulated Deck Slab (SDS) samples remain at Florida Atlantic University (FAU), additional samples continued to be monitored at the FDOT State Materials Office (FDOT-SMO), and columns with CRRB were deployed at the Crescent Beach field site. After reviewing current conditions, selected samples at FAU and at FDOT-SMO were terminated. The field site was visited twice: during one of the visits cores were obtained on selected columns. Briefly, for FAU SDS samples, most rebars appear not to be corroding. Some SDS samples with 3CR12 (with simulated crack and 2 rebars forming a crevice) and clad rebar type 2 (CT2) with intentional damage or clad breaks corroded. Most terminated samples at FDOT-SMO were Tombstone geometry; all selected samples (CT2, 304, 3CR12, MMFX, 2101 and 2304) had at least one rebar that corroded. MMFX rebars showed the most corrosion extent, followed by 3CR12. Clad breaks allowed corrosion to take place on two of the CT2 rebars. Field columns with 2101, 3CR12 and MMFX rebars are corroding based on cracks observed along the rebar length and corrosion potential. Rebar segments obtained (MMFX and 2101) confirm significant cross section loss. The project also included visits to two bridges that contain CRRB in the substructure and are not corroding.
