This report presents the results of a system study for the Turbine Engine Diagnostics (TED) program. This research project was initiated to develop a method of approach and prototype design for a system capable of predicting the failure of rotating parts in turbine engines. Systems Control Technology (SCT) Inc. was contracted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and used an innovative approach that assimilated data from multiple sources for determining trends in engine performance and health. SCT initially performed an extensive technical literature search and industry survey to augment the present understanding of current technology in the industry for computerized diagnostic systems and measurement sensor technology. The result of this study is a proposed system with a method of approach that minimizes the technical and financial risk of turbine engines, while at the same time optimizes the safety factors needed to accurately predict component failures. This proposed system is detailed in this report. Appendix A contains the abstracts from the literature search.
