Abstract:This ferry service and operations study is intended to evaluate current conditions and explore opportunities to improve the overall visitor experience of the Boston Harbor Islands ferry service. This analysis covers Phase I of a multi-phase effort that aims to examine and enhance the overall ferry boat operations. The study is being performed by the U.S. DOT Volpe Center (Volpe) for the National Park Service (NPS) Boston Harbor Islands (BOHA) National Recreation Area (NRA), Boston National Historical Park (BOST), and Boston Harbor Now (BHN) which manages the park's ferry system. This study aims to identify operational alternatives that optimize the ferry system, increase visitation, and support equitable public access to BOHA-BOST. The findings from this study will inform a future infrastructure needs assessment that will explore design considerations for potential acquisition of different vessel types to support operational needs. This study is intended to inform future planning and decision-making. Public input and additional analysis during Phase 2 of the BOHA Ferry Study will help inform any future decisions.
