Abstract:This project quantifies practical performance indices for signalized corridors using low-resolution data from loop detectors and connected vehicles. Traditionally, such metric quantifications do not sufficiently incorporate considerations for fuel consumption or greenhouse gas emissions. Our approach is to estimate the latent traffic state, i.e., queue length, from the data and then utilize the expressions for performance metrics in terms of queue length to quantify performance. We implement the methodology in PTV VISSIM[7], allowing us to compare our estimates with direct performance metrics. The entire framework is illustrated for two signalized corridors, each with 10intersections, one in downtown Los Angeles and the other in downtown Long Beach. We compare performance evaluation under fixed time and an adaptive traffic signal policy in these case studies. The percentage difference between fixed-time and adaptive signal control can be used to indicate potential improvement and to rank corridors. This could potentially contribute towards the development of the 2025 State Highway System Management Plan(SHSMP) by Caltrans.
