Abstract:The intersection of 33rd St. and Hillen Rd. is adjacent to Lake Montebello and serves as a key interface among a major north-south corridor (Hillen Rd.), an east-west neighborhood connection (E 33rd St.), and the park-access roadway system (Whitman Dr. and the E 32nd St. connection). This context can generate frequent pedestrian movements, bicycling and scooter activity, and complex interactions between vehicles and non-vehicle users. Figure 1 depicts the intersection's crosswalks, sidewalks, and bicycle facilities. This road geometry underscores the importance of understanding (i) multimodal exposure (how many users are present), (ii) vehicle operating speeds, and (iii) the frequency and location of vehicle-vehicle and vehicle-pedestrian/bicycle interaction events.
