Abstract:The Handbook has been divided into three sections. The first and largest section covers basic topics pertinent to both management and evaluation. This section is organized chronologically, so that the information the reader will need to know first is presented first. The earlier chapters introduce NHTSA and its activities, describe the demonstration projects and their development, and outline NHTSA's procedures for applicant selection and funding. This will probably be more useful to prospective NHTSA project applicants. Subsequent chapters cover project management, development of the evaluation staff component, preparation of the Detailed Plan and Evaluation Data System, and the report requirements. These will be of greatest interest to those persons already actively involved in a project. The second and third sections of the Handbook address selected, more technical issues in project management and evaluation, respectively. However, several of these chapters describe policies and offer practical suggestions which should be useful to all personnel.
