Abstract:The Autonomous Truck-Mounted Attenuator (ATMA) system is gaining traction for its potential to increase worker safety in short-term mobile operations. Despite its safety advantages, ATMA is still a relatively new technology, and decision-makers like the Department of Transportation (DOTs) face operational and financial viability issues. There are few guidelines currently in place; the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), for instance, offers very little guidance on how to use ATMA operations. This research focuses on developing a decision-making tool that establishes a crucial framework for taking operational and economic deployment feasibility into account in order to close this gap. There are two stages to the tool. To determine a benefit-cost ratio (BCR) and evaluate economic viability, the first step employs a Benefit-Cost Analysis (BCA). Next, the candidate sites (grouped by uninterrupted and interrupted traffic conditions), are ranked using a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) in the second stage. When assessing the viability of ATMA deployment, this step enables users to take into account important factors like roadway geometry, traffic flow, connectivity, and weather. To evaluate the important criteria with weighted values for each site alternative, the MCDA uses four evaluation techniques including the Preference Ranking Organization Methods for Enrichment Evaluations (PROMETHEE), the Weighted Sum Method (WSM), the Weighted Product Method (WPM), and the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS).
