Abstract:The purpose of the test flight was to collect signal level data radiated into an extended high altitude sector from a Very High Frequency (VHF) communications antenna located at the Douglaston, New York RCAG antenna site. A high gain (16 dB) TACO antenna designed for a horizontal beam width of 80°, and a vertical beam width of 10°, was installed at a height of 380 feet above mean sea level and powered from a 50 watt transmitter adjusted to 135.8 MHz. The data was expected to confirm coverage to a range of 275 nautical miles (nmi), above flight level 290, throughout the sector from 70° to 150° true bearing from Douglaston.
