Abstract:The Canada goose population has been on the increase, causing concern over the possibility of increased dual-engine ingestions and potential dual-engine power loss. This report summarizes a review of the historical data concerning bird ingestions in turbofan engines and includes extrapolations of the data needed to forecast future dual-engine ingestion rates. The report also describes a Monte Carlo analysis performed to determine dual-engine power loss probability, given a dual engine ingestion event. These data are combined to forecast dual-engine power loss and catastrophic rates. The results of the analyses are presented and will be used by the Federal Aviation Administration and other regulatory agencies to determine the need for further bird ingestion rulemaking activity.
