Abstract:

This Special Crash Investigations report documents the remote investigation of a fatal heavy truck underride crash of a 2017 International ProStar LF687 truck tractor pulling a 2010 Hyundai trailer in California in December 2022. The crash occurred when the tractor-trailer was making a lefthand turn and was struck by a 2002 Ford Mustang with two adults and two children. The International was driven by a belted 52-year-old male. The Ford driver, a belted 29-year-old male, was killed when the vehicle ran a red light at high speed and underrode the trailer. An unbelted 28-year-old female in the front passenger seat, a belted 9-year-old male in the second-row-left seat, and a 2-year-old female in the second-row-right seat in an unknown child restraint system received injuries and were transported to a local trauma center with minor to moderate injuries. The International driver was not injured.
